Dining Option is an independent blog about one everyday question: where and how should you eat out? We write for people who want to make better choices at restaurants without needing insider knowledge, whether the meal is a quick lunch, a business meeting, a celebration or a first visit somewhere new.
What we cover
Our articles are grouped into a handful of sections. Restaurant Types explains the different kinds of places you can eat, from counter-service cafés to tasting-menu dining rooms, and what each label usually tells you. Ordering helps you read menus, share dishes and ask the right questions. Etiquette covers the customs that make a meal go smoothly, from booking a table to tipping when you travel. Occasions looks at choosing the right restaurant for a particular moment. Our Lifestyle and Leisure & Games sections widen the view to food and everyday life, and to evenings out that combine a meal with something else.
How we choose topics
We start with the questions people actually ask before and during a meal out: how far ahead to book, what a menu term means, whether to tip, how to order for a group. We favour practical, lasting guidance over news or trends, and we try to answer the main question within the first few lines of each article.
How we check facts
Where an article states a fact, a rule, a figure or a date, we take it from a source we have read, and we prefer official and non-commercial sources: government departments, public health bodies, national tourism organisations, universities and established reference works. We link to the key sources so you can read them yourself. If we cannot verify something, we leave it out or present it clearly as general advice. Rules on food labelling, allergens and tipping differ between countries, so we say which country a rule applies to.
We do not invent people, quotes, reviews or statistics, and we generally avoid naming individual restaurants. Places open, close and change; the guidance in our articles is designed to work wherever you are eating.
Contributed articles
Some articles on Dining Option are contributed by third parties. These are reviewed for usefulness and accuracy before publication, and our Disclosure page explains how they are handled and that they may contain links to the contributors’ own websites.
